Austria’s economic relations with Asia

Asia, which accounts for 60 percent of the world's population and roughly 40 percent of economic performance worldwide, continued to be a reliable driver of global economic growth in 2017. Currently some 10 percent of Austria's trade in goods are conducted with this region.

The volume of Austrian trade in goods with Asia continued to increase in 2017 and totalled about €30 bn. Austrian exports of goods to Asia increased by 7.5 percent in 2017 while Austrian imports of goods from Asia increased by 7.2 percent.

Increases of exports to this region in 2017 were particularly steep for Bhutan (629.0 percent), Laos (452.4 percent), South Korea (51.6 percent), Philippines (51 percent) and Vietnam (41 percent).

The most important market outlets for Austrian goods in 2017 continue to be China, Japan, South Korea, India and Singapore their shares in total Austrian exports being 2.6 percent, 1.0 percent, 0.9 percent, 0.5 percent, and 0.3 percent respectively.
