The Business Hours Act 2003 (Öffnungszeitengesetz – ÖZG) governs the opening hours of sales outlets subject to the Trade Act on work days including Saturdays, but also includes special regulations for weekends and public holidays, for 24 December and 31 December as well as for specific sales outlets.
The Act on Business Hours on Sundays and Public Holidays (Sonn- und Feiertagsbetriebszeitengesetz - BZG; Federal Law Gazette No 129/1984 as amended in Federal Law Gazette I No 48/2003) defines under which circumstances businesses may open on Sundays and public holidays.

- Sales outlets may be open from 6:00 to 21:00 Monday to Friday and from 6:00 to 18:00 on Saturdays, with a weekly maximum range of 72 hours.
- In the event of special shopping needs (e.g. early-morning shopping by commuters; shopping events; tourism), the heads of the Länder governments may decree an extension of general business hours.
- Businesses must be kept closed on Sundays and public holidays. There are exceptions for sales outlets eg. in airports or train stations. In case of special regional need, the heads of the Länder governments may decree an extension of general business hours.
